Positive: 5/10 — Beautiful setting, but a very different experience from my previous stay I had previously stayed at Asep Gumi and had an excellent experience, so I returned this time with quite high expectations. Unfortunately, this stay was very different, and I think it is important for future guests to understand both the positives and the issues I experienced. The positives: The natural surroundings are beautiful and peaceful, and the bamboo villa itself has a lot of charm. Once I woke up the next morning and could properly see the surroundings, I actually felt much better about the place. In fact, if I considered only the accommodation and surroundings, rather than the problems and interactions, I would probably rate the experience around 8/10.
Negative: There were, however, several maintenance and presentation issues. The floor was dirty when I arrived, the air-conditioning was not turned on despite me providing my arrival time, the swimming pool was not particularly clean or well lit, the plugs for both the sink and bathtub were unusable, the bathroom tap was very slow, and some of the lighting was not working properly. The villa is also quite remote and requires walking down many steps, with the path being very dark at night. This is worth considering if you arrive after dark or have mobility concerns. For me, though, the biggest issue was communication and how the problems were handled. When I arrived, I was already tired and it was dark, so the initial uncertainty about the property was amplified by the fact that several things were not as I had expected. Communication in English was very difficult, which made it challenging to explain the problems and understand what could actually be done. I felt that responsibility was sometimes passed between different people rather than someone taking clear ownership of resolving the situation, and some commitments regarding a refund/solution were subsequently unclear or changed. I was offered the option of moving to another room/property with a full refund. I understand why this was offered and appreciate that they did try to find a solution. However, given that Asep Gumi is quite remote, I don't think it is realistic to assume that a guest who has just arrived late at night can simply leave and find comparable accommodation elsewhere. At that point, the guest has already travelled a long way and may have very limited alternatives. Eventually, after contacting Booking.com, I was offered a substantial partial refund of 1,500 from the 1,999 I had paid. I think this was a fair resolution, and I appreciate that a solution was ultimately reached. I am deliberately not leaving this review out of anger or as revenge.
